The grizzly bear in this painting is one I had the privilege of encountering during my fall 2011 wildlife research expedition to Knight Inlet in British Columbia.
He was a 3-year old male that frequented the area and was referred to as “Peanut” due to his yellow-gold face. The grizzlies in this area are, for the most part, very dark brownish-black—some with lighter facial colouring, especially the young. In this scene, Peanut is standing in the river feeding on pink salmon that are holding in the shallows underneath the tag alders.
