What is a giclee? 2017-01-18T12:18:23+00:00

The term “giclee” is a French word that was coined in 1991 by printmaker Jack Duganne for fine art digital prints made on inkjet printers. Artists often use inkjet printing to make reproductions of their original two-dimensional artworks. Giclees are printed with archival quality inks onto various acid-free substrates including canvas, fine art paper and photo-based paper. The giclee printing process provides better colour accuracy than other means of reproduction. Giclee reproductions can last well over 100 years.

What is an “unstretched canvas”? 2017-07-29T10:20:17+00:00

An unstretched canvas reproduction is a print on heavy canvas that has not yet been affixed to stretcher bars or a frame. It is shipped to you rolled up in a sturdy tube, saving you money on shipping costs and allowing you the choice of how you want to mount and present it in your home.

All canvas giclee reproductions on this site are unstretched and printed with a standard 1.5″ white border on every side all the way around.

There are two main benefits of buying a reproduction on unstretched canvas. First, it saves you money on shipping costs when you buy it, and second, it can save you on expensive framing costs because an unstretched canvas gives you the flexibility of deciding how you want to display it in your home — framed or unframed.

With an unstretched canvas, you simply take it to a frame shop and they will mount it on stretcher bars. Once it is mounted, you can either hang it for display as is, or you can choose a professional frame to show it in.

What does “limited edition” mean? 2017-01-28T09:18:47+00:00

Limited edition means that only a specific number of reproduction prints are produced from an original painting. The quantity of the edition is determined jointly by the artist and the publisher. That defined quantity establishes the size of the edition, and the artist signs and numbers each individual print in the edition. For example: 50/100, where 50 is the individual print number within an edition size of 100.

What does “artist proof” mean? 2017-01-18T12:15:33+00:00

The Artist’s Proof edition usually, but not always, represents about 10% of the total limited edition size. For example: if the limited edition size of a reproduction print is 100, the Artist’s Proof edition would be 10. Artist’s Proof prints have a perceived higher value in the marketplace due to their limited supply and availability. A print from an Artist’s Proof edition is identified with the words “Artist Proof” or the initials “AP” in front of the number (AP 1/10).
